Halscheid’s Brace Lifts Gauchos over Bulldogs

The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team opened their four-game road trip with a win over Fresno State.

FRESNO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team opened their four-match road trip with a convincing win against Fresno State Thursday night. Hayden Halscheid scored twice in the contest as the Gauchos improved to 2-1-1.

FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
"I thought we had a really solid performance, especially on the road and in the heat," said Stumpf. "We played quality soccer with gritty defense. It's a great start to this four-game road trip."

HOW IT HAPPENED
It did not take long for the Gauchos to find their rhythm on offense. After the first five minutes the Gauchos got two shots off testing the Fresno keeper early. After settling in the Gauchos intercepted a pass in the middle of the field in the 14th minute. Emily Caughey led Emma Corcoran up the field and into the Fresno State box. Corcoran made a move and found Hayden Halscheid unmanned in the box and the junior put the Gauchos on top early.

Santa Barbara continued their pressure on offense ripping two more shots before Halscheid netted her second goal of the game, and her third of the season. After gaining possession Natalie Sheffey raced up the field and looked to take a shot with the keeper coming out of the net. Sheffey dished it off to Halscheid who was patient, settling the ball and scoring her second goal of the game in the 28th minute.

The second half was back and forth with neither side gaining an edge early on. As the half progressed the Bulldogs started to find their offense, but Maddie Buckley and the backline of the Gauchos was up to the test. Fresno State took nine shots in the second half nearly doubling their shot total from the first half. Buckley recorded her first clean sheet of the season as the Gauchos defeated the Bulldogs 2-0.
