Decathlete Brad Thomas Places Sixth at USATF Championships, Earns Spot at NACAC Championships

EUGENE, Ore. — Gaucho alum Brad Thomas showed out against the nation's best at Hayward Field this weekend placing sixth in the USA Track & Field Decathlon Championships with 7742 points. Thomas secured his spot at the 2025 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) Championships held in Freeport, Bahamas from August 15-17. 

The recent graduate was no stranger to Hayward Field having earned National Runner-Up and All-American status with 7888 points at the 2025 NCAA Track & Field Championships just two months before.

The USATF Decathlon Championships kicked off on Thursday with the 100m where Thomas got 854 points on the board with a time of 11.03. He posted solid performances in the Thursday field events of long jump, shot put and high jump to put him at 3077 points. Thomas put on his best showing of the day in the 400m placing fifth with a time of 48.47.

Starting off Friday in eighth place, Thomas fought to move up throughout the day starting with a personal best time of 15.37 in the 110m hurdles. He followed it up with another personal best in the discus with a distance of 43.36 meters. A strong showing in pole vault and a fourth place finish in javelin pushed him up in the standings with one more event on the line. 

Thomas took first place in the 1500m with a lights-out performance. His time of 4:26.46 earned him the final 768 points to jump into sixth place overall. 

The USATF Outdoor Championships serve as the selection event for the 2025 World Athletics Championships and the 2025 NACAC Area Championships. Thomas' selection by USATF will send him to the Bahamas from August 15-17 to compete in the NACAC Athletics Senior Championships with Decathlon events starting the morning of Friday, August 15.
