SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team continued its winning ways by defeating Sacramento State 2-0 on Sunday afternoon.
Emily Caughey and
Mya Delaney joined the long list of Gaucho goal scorers this season with goals in the 12
th and 74
th minutes.
HOW IT HAPPENED
A slow start to the game quickly changed in the 12
th minute. After three consecutive shots within a minute, the Gauchos were awarded a corner kick after the Sac State goalkeeper saved
Olivia Howard's shot.
Caitlyn Simons went to the far side of the field and sent the corner kick into the middle of the box, finding the head of
Mya Delaney who placed a header perfectly to give the Gauchos a 1-0 lead. The goal was Delaney's first of her Gaucho career.
For the remainder of the half, UC Santa Barbara dominated the possession and the match, outshooting the Hornets 15-1 and holding 73 percent of the possession after the conclusion of the first 45 minutes. Unfortunately, the Gauchos could not find the back of the net again in the first half and went to the break up 1-0.
Coming out of the break, the Hornets played more aggressively and in the 47
th minute had their first shot on goal, which was saved by
Kate Willmering. Despite other chances and more shots than in the first half, the Gauchos' defense did not break. As the game continued, the Gauchos nearly got their second goal of the game in the 68
th minute after
Hayden Halscheid sent one of the right post, but moments later, the Blue and Gold netted their second of the game.
A bouncing ball and a failed clear by the opposition led to
Emily Caughey getting a point-blank shot from 18 yards out to and sending a shot to the high right side of the goal and scoring her first goal of the season. UC Santa Barbara held on to the lead for the remainder of the game, winning their sixth straight to improve to 7-1-1.
