Gauchos Battle to Scoreless Draw with Hawai'i

WAIPAHU, Hawaii — The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team and the University of Hawai'i ended in a scoreless draw on Sunday at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium. Despite UC Santa Barbara's 10 shots and three on target, UH's defense held firm. Hawaii managed eight shots, with two on goal.

FROM HEAD COACH PAUL STUMPF
"I am really proud of the grit and determination we showed," said Stumpf. "Hawai'i sat idle on Thursday and we played a tough game at Davis. Now you add on the travel all the way here, getting a result today is big. We had two really good looks, just couldn't get it past the keeper."

HOW IT HAPPENED
The first half between UC Santa Barbara and UH saw both teams battling to break the deadlock, but neither side was able to score. Hawai'i took the first shot of the game in the fourth minute, missing to the left, while another attempt in the 18th minute was saved by Maddie Buckley. On the other side, Haley Phillips tested UH's goalkeeper in the 30th minute with a shot to the bottom center, which was saved. A physical first half saw both teams commit multiple fouls, while the half ended scoreless, setting up a tense second half.

UC Santa Barbara and the Rainbow Wahine maintained a scoreless second period, with both teams creating opportunities but failing to find the back of the net. UH had an early corner kick in the 47th minute, but UC Santa Barbara responded with several shots, including two attempts by Olivia Howard in the 48th and 52nd minutes. Hawaii took two shots following the Gauchos' attempts, though neither was on target. Emily Caughey had two shots saved by Hawaii's goalkeeper with the first notable save occurring in the 72nd minute. Despite multiple fouls and a yellow card issued to both teams, the match ended in a 0-0 draw.
