SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — The UC Santa Barbara Men's Soccer team returned to find Harder Stadium seemingly replaced by a house of horrors after 17 days away, with missed chances and defensive miscues haunting the Gauchos in a 4-1 loss to California Baptist on Tuesday night.
Steinar Bjornsson scored his ninth goal of the season from the penalty spot in the second half to hint at a Santa Barbara comeback, but two late goals and a red card sealed the Gauchos' fate.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lancer goals came like apparitions, materializing from almost nothing. Santa Barbara was an even match for their visitors, if not even the better team for much of the first 20 minutes on Tuesday. In the ninth,
Kaden Standish forced a save with a side-footed shot that looked more like a firm pass than the usual driven strike from the top of the penalty area, and he was on the receiving end of some brilliant link-up play between
Peleg Brown and
Donovan Sessoms down the left-hand side of the field. Had Standish not had three defenders between him and the goal, he may have had a better chance to test the goalkeeper.
Â
The Gauchos had a great moment of turning defense to offense in the 17
th minute when
Jack Middleton slid to cut out a low cross in his own penalty area, then Standish played a pass with the outside of his foot that sliced like a golf shot to send Bjornsson into CBU's penalty area, but the Icelander's shot was blocked.
Â
Three minutes later, a bad bounce off a Gaucho defender gave the visitors a clean look at goal, which they finished off. Santa Barbara almost scored in immediate response as
Zac Siebenlist broke through the defensive line, but his pass across the face of goal was cleared away before Sessoms could tap it in. Then in the 25
th minute, another mistake led to the second Lancer goal, a turnover in midfield needing just one pass and then a finish into the low far corner.
Â
The Gaucho offense was given a chill for nearly the next 30 minutes of game time, and when the gilt-edged chances started to come again, they somehow went the wrong side of the woodwork. Halftime substitute
Colby Renton sparked a chance in the 54
th minute by forcing a turnover high up the pitch and crossing the ball to Standish, but his header went wide of the post. It drifted out by such a narrow margin that fans could see the ball's shadow on the woodwork with the naked eye. On the hour mark, it was a last-second deflection from a Lancer that sent Bjornsson's shot high after Sessoms had danced through the defense and set the Icelander up just four yards from goal.
Â
Santa Barbara did finally break through in the 64
th minute, though not without more last-second intervention from CBU. The Gauchos were awarded a penalty kick after a coach's challenge confirmed that
Viggo Gustavsson had been illegally dragged to the turf in the penalty area, but as Bjornsson stepped up to take the penalty, the Lancers challenged the ruling, hoping (fruitlessly) to find a Gaucho infraction that would render the spot kick null and void. Despite the ado, Bjornsson finished cooly.
Â
Less than a minute later, the Lancers had a player who was inactive for the night, serving a suspension for accumulation of yellow cards, sent off from their bench after another coach's challenge revealed that he had tripped Standish after Standish had slid off the field. But before the Gauchos could use that triumph to help breathe more life into their offense, CBU conjured another goal. They won a header in the midfield, and after no more than a couple of touches from their forward, the ball was struck across the face of goal and into the bottom corner, effectively the nail in Santa Barbara's coffin.
Â
To add to the misery, Sessoms was shown a yellow card that means he will miss the Gauchos' final game of the regular season on Saturday due to accumulation, and Renton accumulated two yellow cards in the same half to earn himself a red. And in the 89
th minute, a Lancer dribbled through the defense, saw his first shot saved but then put home the rebound.

UP NEXT
Despite its bone-chilling nature, Tuesday night's defeat does not leave the Gauchos entirely dead and buried. Santa Barbara can still earn a spot in The Big West Championship with a result against CSUN on Saturday and/or some help elsewhere. And if there is some beacon of hope, the last time the Gauchos conceded four goals — at Marshall in 2025 — they proceeded to go unbeaten over their next 13 matches.
