NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Behind a perfect performance from the free throw line and multiple double digit performances, the UC Santa Barbara handily defeated CSUN 74-58 Thursday night. With the win, the Gauchos collect double-digit conference wins and their second defeat of the Matadors this season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Matadors and Gauchos spent the first five minutes of the game deciphering the lead, trading baskets until UC Santa Barbara made it to 15-11. The multiple-shot lead would hold for the rest of the game. Santa Barbara then proceeded with eight more points to close out the quarter 23-14.
The second period lulled for the Gauchos, as they only scored 13 points compared to their previous 23. However, they remained dominant and finished ahead 36-26. Maddie Naro made half of those points, first driving a layup then immediately following with a long-distance bucket.
The third period was the only one the Matadors outscored the Gauchos in, making 22 points to Santa Barbara's 20. It was still the Gaucho's lead, though, as they ended up at 56-48. Four Gauchos made threes, and Jessica Grant put in two for her best three-point performance since the first CSUN match up.
The Gauchos put up 18 points in the final period, outdoing CSUN by eight. Naro put in two free throws for the final Gaucho tallies. For the first time this season, the Gauchos made a remarkable 100% of their free throws, going 14 for 14 from the charity stripe. Five Gauchos contributed, each succeeding in their endeavors to go 100%.
The Gauchos reached 70 points for the first time this month and shot 37.5% in threes. The Gauchos continue their win streak over the Matadors, now holding a 13-game heading over CSUN.
Zoe Borter hit 20 points once again, shooting 50% overall and making four threes. Chauncey Andersen and Olivia Bradley also made it into doubles, collecting 11 and ten, respectively. Júlia Puente-Valverde made ten rebounds to head the Gaucho effort, while Skylar Burke followed with eight.
