LONG BEACH, Calif. — The UC Santa Barbara Women's Water Polo team prepares for their Big West Championship quarterfinal match versus No. 1 seed Hawai'i this Friday, April 10.
LAST TIME OUT
Last Saturday, the Gauchos fell to No. 16 UC San Diego in their final game of the regular season, incurring a 15-8 loss for the senior day matchup.
UCSB had 28 shots on goal, compared to UCSD's 26, but was just unable to break through for more scoring.
Molly Souza led the Gauchos with two goals in the game, along with one assist, bringing her record up to 14 goals for the regular season.
The Tritons pulled away with an 8-3 lead entering the half, but the Gauchos were able to turn around in the third quarter, scoring three to keep pace with UCSD. In the fourth quarter,
Zoe Gabriel contributed one more goal for the Gauchos, as did
Brynn Tully.
UCSB and Hawai'i's last matchup was not too long ago, taking place in Oahu on March 28. Ariadna Temprano Xambó contributed 4 goals for the Rainbow Wahine, taking Hawai'i to a 18-4 victory, but the Gauchos' and redshirt senior leader,
Cami Mras, did not let it stop her from taking charge, as she was able to put away a hat-trick against the top-ranked team.
SCOUTING THE RAINBOW WAHINE
Fresh off a 20-2 win versus Cal State Fullerton and their third regular-season title in a row, Hawai'i enters The Big West Championship as the No. 1 seed. That win over the Titans marks 26 consecutive Big West victories for the Rainbow Wahine, who will be defending their Big West Championship title from 2025 this weekend.
The victory against Cal State Fullerton came from a strong Hawai'i offense, with multiple players scoring hat-tricks, including Raha Peiravani, Gabrielle Doyle, and Asimina Klapsianou. The Rainbow Wahine took quick control of the game, entering the half with a 11-0 lead. Goalie Daisy Logtens defended the score with five saves, and Nalani Yim also contributed with four, but let in the two that allowed for Cal State Fullerton to put themselves on the board.
