SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — If the UC Santa Barbara Men's Soccer team's 3-0 opening night win over San Jose State looked like something of a warm-up, that is because it effectively was. Having dispatched a Spartans squad without a number of the players who brought them one game from the NCAA Tournament last season, the Gauchos will now host a pair of teams that picked up wins in 2025's national postseason and proved their credentials to return to the dance this year: No. 12 Marshall and the fast-rising No. 2 San Diego.
 
The Thundering Herd, who trampled Santa Barbara, 4-0, in West Virginia last season, will make their first-ever visit to Harder Stadium on Thursday, Aug. 27, while the Toreros come to town on Monday, Aug. 31. The last time San Diego stopped at Harder Stadium, they were on the short end of one of the most lopsided results in both the stadium's and the UC Santa Barbara program's 60-year history: a 7-1 Gaucho victory to open the 2021 season.

Season and single-game tickets for all 10 of UC Santa Barbara Men's Soccer's home matches are on sale now! The Gauchos' home slate includes visits from three teams that appear in the national preseason top 25, as well as three Big West contests. Santa Barbara was The Big West Regular Season Champion in 2025 and has hosted The Big West Championship Final in each of the last two seasons, and fans can be at Harder Stadium for every game as the Gauchos hunt another conference title, with season tickets starting at $125.

LAST TIME OUT
The Gauchos received votes in this week's national ranking poll after opening their season with a dominant 3-0 win over San Jose State on Friday. Kaden Standish's long-range screamer opened the scoring and proved to be the game-winning score, but Simone Ferrieri tallied his first collegiate goal just before halftime and Mateos Carvalho sealed the result late on.
 
Ferrieri was named The Big West Rookie of the Week for his score and his role in maintaining the clean sheet, while a handful more newcomers impressed in the midfield. Tobi Gerber was credited with the assist on Standish's goal as part of a strong 60 minutes off the bench, and both Kalle Rahbek and Ty Branigan earned shoutouts from head coach Tim Vom Steeg for their 90-minute shifts in the attacking and defensive areas of midfield respectively. Another attacking midfielder, Martin Odegaard Oesthagen, set up Carvalho's late goal with an inch-perfect cross, and Peleg Brown assisted Ferrieri's goal in what was his first competitive action after missing all of the 2025 season through injury.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
No. 12 Marshall entered the season at no. 17 in the national rankings but climbed five spots after an opening-weekend win over Fairfield back home in West Virginia. It took until the final six seconds for the Herd to break a 1-1 deadlock with the Stags, but sophomore forward Adam N'Goran played hero with the 90^th-minute winner, the first goal of his career.
 
Santa Barbara had its first-ever meeting with Marshall last season, a forgettable 4-0 defeat in West Virginia in which now-senior forward Joao Roberto scored twice and assisted a third. To look on the bright side, he is the only Herd goalscorer returning for this year's fixture, though junior midfielder Nikita Pakhomov is the younger brother of Kirill, who scored the opener last season.
 
The other danger man in green and white is senior forward Carl Romberg, who earned preseason All-Sun Belt honors after leading the Herd with five goals and five assists in 2025.
 
No. 2 San Diego rocketed up the poll from preseason no. 18 after opening their 2026 campaign by upsetting reigning national champions and preseason no. 1 Washington in Seattle. They followed that up with a 3-1 win over Liberty to enter this week as the second-best team in the country. They will face the nation's new no. 1, Stanford, in Palo Alto on Thursday night. Among a talented group, forward Steven Ramirez and midfielder Iain Wagner have earned the early headlines. Ramirez recorded an assist in the upset of Washington and scored twice to defeat Liberty, while Wagner is one of 27 men on the preseason shortlist for the Hermann Trophy, the National Player of the Year Award.
 
The Gauchos also paid the Toreros a visit in 2025, suffering an ugly 3-1 loss in which both Ramirez and Wagner scored for San Diego. That was 22^nd all-time meeting between the two teams and only the eighth time that the Toreros took home the honors, with Santa Barbara owning 13 wins and the teams sharing just one draw in the all-time series. The last time San Diego visited Harder Stadium, in 2021, the Gauchos ran riot, to the tune of a 7-1 victory. That haul remains the program's largest ever against a Division-I opponent and stands as the largest margin of victory in the Vom Steeg era.
