SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. — It is hailed as the greatest rivalry in college soccer and it has featured on the calendar for all 60 years of UC Santa Barbara Men's Soccer history. It has provided 19 of the 25 largest on-campus crowds ever for NCAA Men's Soccer. It is, of course, the Blue-Green Rivalry and on Friday, the Gauchos will visit San Luis Obispo for the 90^th installment. Friday's match is the first leg of the derby in 2026, with the return fixture to be played on Oct. 10 at Harder Stadium. Santa Barbara has not lost in the last three Blue-Green Rivalry matches and won the most recent meeting, 1-0 on the road last October. The Gauchos have won a total of 54 of the previous 89 meetings, with 14 draws. Twenty-two of those Santa Barbara victories have come in San Luis Obispo, compared to just 17 defeats and four ties.
 
LAST TIME OUT
The Gauchos are looking for improvement after an underwhelming showing against Oregon State on Sunday night. A pair of defensive miscues gifted the Beavers two decisive goals and soured the mood on a night where Peleg Brown continued what has been a triumphant comeback season by scoring his first collegiate goal. In fact, the junior left back, who missed all of 2025 with an injury, put the ball in the back of the net twice but was denied a brace by a VAR-discovered offside offence.
 
Despite playing on the left side of Santa Barbara's back line, Brown has been one of the best creative players in all of college soccer this season, ranking among the top 50 Division-I student athletes in assists, both on a total and per-game basis. His return has helped power up a Gaucho attack that is one of the most free-firing in the nation, ranking 17^th in shots per game. Compared to this time last season, Santa Barbara is averaging nearly twice as many goals on just one more shot per game, and its +4 goal differential is a vast improvement on its mark of -6 after the first eight games of 2025.
 
In another welcome improvement from 2025, the 2026 Gauchos have three multi-goal scorers and six different players to find the back of the net so far this year. Donovan Sessoms linked up with Brown to assist his goal on Sunday night, a third helper for the Sacramento State transfer who has been a dual threat on the Gauchos' front line, scoring two goals and assisting three.
 
SCOUTING THE OPPONENTS
Friday's hosts have not played a match since Sept. 16, when they lost at home to Cal State Bakersfield, 3-2. The team in green's two goals both came from penalty kicks — one converted and one missed but the rebound turned in — though at no point did the hosts lead. The two goals from the spot gave junior midfielder Colin Pearce the outright team lead with three goals on the season, going along with a team-high three assists. Pearce is his team's only player with multiple assists on the year, though nine of his teammates have recorded one. Of those nine teammates with an assist to their names, five have also found the net this season, though junior defender Devin Bening is the only one other than Pearce with both multiple goals and an assist. Junior forward Finn Linas has two goals but no assist; he, Bening and Pearce are the only multi-goal scorers on the team so far this season.
 
Down at the other end of the pitch, there is a new man between the sticks in San Luis Obispo this season. Following the graduation of 2025 Big West Goalkeeper of the Year Nicky McCune, rookie Mathew Guerra has taken over netminding duties. He has kept three clean sheets so far, though he did not need to make a save in the most recent one, a 2-0 shutout of Utah Tech. Overall, he has saved 61.5 percent of the shots on target lobbed his way through eight games.
