Legitimizing their status as an elite soccer program in the nation, the Gauchos appeared in the 2004 NCAA Championship game. Although they lost to the Indiana Hoosiers on penalties, the 2004 Gauchos proved through their impressive season and tournament performance that UCSB was poised to be a top program for years to come.

The Gauchos finally reached the pinnacle of college soccer by defeating UCLA 2-1 in St. Louis, MO. for the 2006 NCAA National Championship to claim the program's first National Championship since men’s water polo in 1979. Halfway through the 2006 season the Gauchos were just 7-6, but they turned up the heat down the stretch. They finished the season 17-7-1 and received the Big West's automatic berth into the tournament. UCSB's postseason run included upsets over the tournament's second and third-seeded teams. Head Coach Tim Vom Steeg received his second Coach of the Year award in 2006.
