Jon Newton joined UCSB's coaching staff in the summer of 2014 as a volunteer assistant coach. Before his time with the Gauchos, Newton competed at Ohio State as a middle blocker from 2012-14 under coach Pete Hanson. With the Buckeyes, he was a scholar-athlete who was named to both the Big Ten and Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association all-academic teams. He graduated from Ohio State with a bachelor's degree in sport and leisure studies.

A Santa Barbara local, he played middle blocker at Santa Barbara City College from 2010-11 for coach Melody Parker. Before playing at the collegiate level, Newton attended San Marcos High where he played under Jon Lee for three seasons (2006-08) and for Roger Kuntz during his senior season (2009). In his final year with the Royals, Newton served as team captain and was named First Team All-Channel League and team MVP. 

He is currently the head coach for San Marcos High’s varsity boys volleyball team.
