2017: Serving as co-team captain alongside fellow senior Chanel Hoffman, Bast appeared in 20 matches and 72 sets ... Utilized mostly as a back row and serving specialist, she finished the season with 157 digs (2.18 per set), 10 aces (0.14), and 24 assists (0.33) ... Also spent time as an outside hitter, most notably on Aug. 27 against Baylor when she had a career-best nine kills on a team-high 36 swings ...  Started 10 of the team's first 11 matches ... Missed eight consecutive matches, from Sept. 16 to Oct. 17, due to a knee injury ... Worked hard in rehab and made it back for the final nine matches of the campaign ... Had six double-digit dig performances ... Recorded a season-high 16 digs in each of the first two matches of the year ... Arguably her best outing of the year came on on Sept. 8 against Yale in the UCSB Thunderdome Classic, as she had a season-high three aces along with 15 digs ... Averaged 1.81 digs per set in conference play.

2016: As a junior, played in 28 of the team's 29 matches ... Entered a total of 76 sets, mostly as a defensive specialist ... Totaled 125 digs on the season, an average of 1.64 per set ... After the season, was named the recipient of the 2016 ChoGuts Award, handed to the UCSB women's volleyball player who always gives 100% and inspires her teammates ... Had four double-digit dig performances ... Had a career-high 11 digs in three separate matches ... Had 10+ digs in three of the final five matches of the season ... Added a season-high eight assists at UC Davis on Nov. 3 ... Averaged 2.06 digs per set in Big West play ... Had a career-best three aces in a four-set win against Cal St. Fullerton on Nov. 11 ... A strong student, she was named to the Athletic Director's Honor Roll as well as being named Academic All-Big West.

2015: Played in six matches and 20 sets before having her season cut short due to injury … Had a three-match stretch of posting double figures in digs, which was capped off with a career-high 18 scoops versus San Diego State on Sept. 19 … Had three service aces in that same match against SDSU … Recorded a career-high nine assists against UCLA on Sept. 13 …Finished the season with 62 digs and was second on the team in averaging 3.10 digs per set … Recorded 19 assists, five service aces, and one kill through the season.

2014: Bast appeared in 13 matches and 24 sets in her freshman campaign … Recorded 20 digs and two assists … Registered both of her assists along with a season-high seven digs against Loyola Marymount on Sept 5. 

High School: Played for four years under coach Sean Douglas at St. Lucy’s Priory High … As a senior, she was named All-CIF, the team’s Defensive Player of the Year, and the San Gabriel Valley Tribune Player of the Year … During her final season with the Regents, she made the switch from libero to outside hitter, but she recorded a career-high 258 digs while also reaching personal-bests of 239 kills and 48 aces … She led the Regents to four league titles and back-to-back CIF Championships during her freshman and sophomore campaigns. 

Club: Bast competed with the Mizuno Long Beach Volleyball Club where she was a team captain for seven years … She helped lead her 2010 team to a silver medal finish at the Junior Olympics ... Bast is also an accomplished beach player, as she won the AAU Beach National Championship with Susannah Muno in 2012.

Personal: Sydney Michelle Bast was born on November 17, 1995 in Upland, Calif. to parents Steve and Antoinette … She has two older brothers: Ryan and Nick … Her favorite sports teams are the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots … Lists coming back from an 0-2 deficit to defeat UC Davis on Nov. 3, 2016 as her favorite UCSB moment ... Her most memorable pre-UCSB sports moments are winning the AAU Beach National Championship and winning back-to-back CIF titles … Her favorite movie is Fever Pitch … She enjoys watching Grey's Anatomy … Sydney likes listening to music by her brother Ryan Bast and Ed Sheeran … In her free time, she likes baking and cooking … Her favorite athlete is Dustin Pedroia … Majoring in Communication.
