UC Santa Barbara's women's basketball team defeated Boise State, 72-54, on Friday night in front of 2,575 fans at the Thunderdome. Lindsay Taylor led the Gauchos with a career-high 24 points while grabbing nine rebounds. The Broncos were led by Crista Peterson, who scored 11 points. UCSB improves to 10-6 overall, 4-0 in Big West play. Boise State drops to 6-11, 2-2 in conference action.
In a first half that was plagued by 32 total turnovers, UCSB took an early lead scoring the first eight points of the game. Boise scored their first points on a layup by Andrea Swindall with 11:42 remaining in the half. UCSB pushed the lead to as many as 14 in the opening period on five different occasions. Freshman Jessica Combs led all scorers in the half with nine points on 3-of-4 shooting from the field. Kayte Christensen scored six points and grabbed six rebounds in nine minutes of action in the first half. Jenny Binford led Boise with six points at the break, including a jumper with 30 seconds remaining to cut the lead to 31-19 headed into the intermission.
The second half was a much different story. An 18-to-6 Boise run to start the second half, capped off by an Abby Vaughn 3-pointer with 14:55 remaining in the game, tied the score at 37. Debby Caine answered right back with a trey of her own to give the Gauchos the lead back at 40-37. Vaughn cut the lead back to one with a driving layup with 13:30 remaining, however it was the closest the Broncos would get to the Gauchos for the rest of the game. UCSB built a 10 point lead, at 62-52 with 1:32 left in the contest, helping to secure the 18-point victory. Taylor scored 20 of her game-high 24 points in the second half. The Gauchos, who had committed 15 turnovers in the first half, only had three in the period.
UCSB will host the University of Idaho on Super Sunday with a special 12:00 noon tip-off time. It will be Stacy Clinesmith at the Thunderdome, and the Sacramento Monarchs star will be a part of the festivities and will be available for autographs on a special commemorative poster after the game.
