IRVINE, Calif. -
The 11th-ranked UC Irvine women's water polo team (14-10, 4-5) defeated No. 8 UC Santa Barbara 11-5 Sunday afternoon in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play at Anteater Aquatics Complex.
UCI took a 3-2 lead with 2:08 left in the first period on a goal by junior Jackie Prine, and would the match the rest of the way. Prine added a power play goal with 4:09 left in the second period to build a 4-2 lead.
Irvine took a three goal lead with 5:34 left in the third period as sophomore Jessica Lewis scored her second goal of the game to make it 6-3. Prine gave UCI a four-goal lead with her third goal of the match on a power play with 5:21 left in the fourth. The Anteaters outscored the Gauchos 4-1 in the fourth period to seal the win.
Prine, Robyn Kaake and Gianna Rossi each scored three goals for UCI. Jen D'Anna had a pair of goals for UCSB.
Sophomore keeper Lauren Machanis had five saves for the Anteaters. Gaucho keeper Jenny Gonzales had seven saves on the day.
UCSB (12-14, 2-7) will try to halt its current five-match losing streak on Saturday, April 8, traveling to Cal State Northridge for a 10:00 a.m. MPSF contest.
