SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. - Morgan Miller scored
the games only goal in the 35th minute to lead Cal Poly to a 1-0
shutout win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Friday night at A.G.
Spanos Stadium. The loss ends the Gauchos' season.
UCSB (8-9-2 overall, 3-5-0 in the Big West) had its hopes of
making the Big West Tournament dashed on Thursday night when Cal
State Northridge defeated Cal State Fullerton. The Mustangs (8-9-1
overall, 3-4-1 in the Big West) were already out of contention
before the week began.
Miller's goal came after she took a corner kick from Julie McKee
and scored on a shot from far right, 25 yards out and into the far
post.
Cal Poly outshot the Gauchos 15-7, including 7-2 in shots on
goal. Freshman goalkeeper Makenna Henry kept
UCSB in the match with six saves, but her team could not get a shot
past Mustang goalkeeper Brooke Gauvin.
"Unfortunately we came out a little slow again," said Gaucho
head coach Paul
Stumpf. "Cal Poly is a high-pressure team and we just didn't
handle the pressure well in the first half. The second half was
much better, we kind of picked things up."
In the 72nd minute, UCSB appeared to get its best opportunity to
score. Sophomore midfielder Erin Ortega took the
ball on the right flank and curled into the middle at the near
post. After she entered the box with the ball, Ortega was tripped
by a Cal Poly player, but following a brief discussion, the
officials ruled that the play happened outside of the box and thus
a free kick just outside the box, not a penalty kick, was awarded.
The Gauchos failed to score on the subsequent play.
The game ended the career for 10 UCSB seniors: Kailyn Kugler, Jacqui Simon,
Kylie
McDonald, Julia Speace, Jessie
Edmonds, Stacy Myrick, Nicole
Romanowski, Erica Seidman, Brooke Salyer
and Kat
Serdio. Stumpf preferred to reflect on the groups achievements,
not necessarily the loss to Cal Poly.
"These seniors had great careers," he said. "They went to two
NCAA Tournaments, won two Big West Tournament championships and won
some really big games. They worked very hard and achieved a great
deal. I am very proud of them."
