SAN JOSE, Calif. – No. 17 UC Santa Barbara split a pair of games on Sunday, the final day of the Spartan Invitational at San Jose State. The Gauchos (2-3) defeated Fraser Valley of Canada in an exhibition, 15-10, before falling to No. 2 Cal, 11-7. 

In the first game of the day, the Gauchos quickly climbed out to a commanding 7-2 lead at halftime against Fraser Valley. In the third, Fraser Valley outscored the Gauchos, 4-3 to cut the UCSB lead to four heading into the final eight minutes. The Gauchos had their biggest offensive surge in the fourth quarter, tallying five goals on their way to the 15-10 win.

Molly Hafferkamp, Bryce Winton and Kacey Creek each posted a hat trick in the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Genevieve Feiner tallied four saves.

Against Cal, UCSB fell behind 2-1 in the first quarter and the Golden Bears built their lead to two goals at 5-3 heading into halftime. Cal used a strong third quarter to stretch its advantage to five goals.

The Gauchos were able to outscore Cal, 3-2, during the final quarter, but it wasn't enough to overcome the nation's No. 2 ranked team.

Winton tallied her second hat trick of the day to lead the Gauchos offensively. Goalkeeper Ruth Milne, meanwhile, posted six saves.

UCSB will open at home next Friday, Jan. 27 when it hosts Arizona State at noon and Concordia at 3:30 p.m. at Campus Pool. The Gauchos will also host the nine-team UCSB Winter Invite on Jan. 28-29.
