Pettibone and Roenicke Help Gauchos Sweep Spartans

Box Score

SAN JOSE, Calif. – Another terrific performance by the UC Santa Barbara baseball team's pitching staff carried the Gauchos to a 5-2 victory over San Jose State in a three-game sweep.

Lance Roenicke had two doubles and two RBI to back up Austin Pettibone who allowed just two earned runs in six solid innings with three strikeouts. It was Pettibone's first collegiate victory just two days after he slammed the door on Friday's 3-1 win for his first career save.

The Gauchos scored two runs to open the scoring in the third inning when Roenicke's double drove in Brett Vertigan after the Gauchos' junior centerfielder had driven in a run with a single.

Even though SJSU had scored twice in the sixth inning, it came after UCSB pushed across a run on Luke Swenson's pinch hit single scored a run.

After SJSU scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, senior left-hander Zak Edgington came in and retired five of the six batters he faced to bring the Gauchos to the ninth with a 3-2 lead.

In the ninth Joey Wallace scored on Roenicke's second double and Brandon Trinkwon's groundout brought in Roenicke for a comfortable lead. For Trinkwon, it marked the end of his terrific weekend in which he went 5-for-8 with five walks and three RBI.

Matt Vedo entered the game with two on and nobody out in the ninth for the Gauchos and got a groundball and a double play line drive to end the game for UCSB as the Gauchos swept the Spartans. It was UCSB's first series sweep since a four-game outing vs. Northern Illinois in March, 2010.

The Gauchos play at Fresno State with a 6 p.m. game on Tuesday night. That game will be broadcast live online – click here to listen.

UCSB returns home for a three-game series vs. Loyola Marymount starting next Friday at 2 p.m. Get your tickets by clicking here or calling 893-UCSB.
