SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — UC Santa Barbara has been ranked the no. 1 program in overall quality among NCAA Division-I baseball programs outside of the power four conferences. The Gauchos also ranked no. 9 overall among all Division-I programs and no. 1 within The Big West.
Â
These rankings are according to data compiled by College Baseball Match Finder, built from 200,000 records such as game results and roster entries across Divisions I, II, and III to create and evaluate 11 key quality metrics over six seasons of data from 2021 to 2026. Match Finder is an analytics tool designed for prospects in high school, junior college and the transfer portal to assess the overall student-athlete experience at a given college baseball program. From factors like academic reputation, earnings, net price, win percentage, title contention, coaching stability, program budget, weather, location, favorable travel, and homegrown roster structure, it is easy to see why UC Santa Barbara took the top spot.
Â
Santa Barbara stood out nationally in key categories such as winning percentage and coaching stability under head coach
Andrew Checketts, but also in environmental factors like location and weather.
Â
The program's rise on the field has translated directly into the big leagues, producing the first pitcher taken in two consecutive Major League Baseball Drafts:
Tyler Bremner second overall in 2025 and
Jackson Flora fourth overall in 2026. Six Gauchos were selected in the 2026 MLB Draft alone, contributing to more than 20 players drafted from the program since 2021 and 76 overall during Checketts' tenure.
The Gauchos have also maintained a consistent postseason presence, highlighted by Big West Championships in 2021 and 2024 to bring the program's all-time conference title tally to five, plus NCAA Regional appearances in four of the last six national tournaments. That run includes hosting the 2024 NCAA Santa Barbara Regional at Caesar Uyesaka Stadium, which has since received a $15 million gift for facility upgrades.
