SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The No. 15 Gauchos (10-9) were back in action at the UCI Invitational on a beautiful Sunday in Irvine, Calif. when they beat No. 8 San Jose State (8-7), 9-8, and suffered a tough loss against No. 7 UC Irvine (14-3), 11-5.
In the first game, the Gauchos fell behind San Jose in the first quarter, 3-2, and again, UCSB was outscored in the second quarter, 5-3.
In the second half, the Gauchos came back and tied San Jose State when they scored two goals tying them at 5-5 in the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter UCSB upset San Jose as they took the win 9-8, with four goals from freshman Lauren Martin, juniors Rachel Nelson and Nancy Ruano, and freshman Claryann Olofsson-Loo.
When the Gauchos played for the second time of the day, they started off strong tying UC Irvine 2-2 in the first quarter. In the second quarter, the Anteaters ended the half leading in goals, leaving the Gauchos trailing behind, 5-4.
Starting the second half, the Gauchos fell behind 9-4 in the third quarter, and the in rest of the fourth quarter, UCI kept scoring to win 11-5.
Notably for the Gauchos, junior Shelby Haroldson scored two goals, along with Rachel Nelson and Bryce Winton who scored one goal each.
