Box Score RENO – The UC Santa Barbara baseball team bounced back in a big way in the second game of its series at Nevada on Saturday, knocking off the Wolf Pack 13-5.
Most of the Gauchos damage was done in the seventh, when they scored seven times on seven hits. Six of the hits were singles, as the only extra-base hit, a double, came from UCSB's leading hitter Brett Vertigan.
Vertigan led an 18-hit attack with three of his own while Lance Roenicke also had three hits. All but one Gaucho starter had multiple hits on the afternoon and seven had at least a run batted in.
UCSB improved to 7-7 on the season with the victory.
Freshman left-hander Andrew Vasquez (2-1) went eight superb innings, allowing just one earned run on six hits while striking out eight.
The Gauchos scored four runs in the third inning, all with two outs. Brandon Trinkwon's two-strike single scored Vertigan for the Gauchos' first run of the afternoon and then Joey Wallace doubled down the left field line to bring in two more. Wallace scored on the next pitch as Greg Mahle lined a single up the middle.
