BERKELEY, Calif. – The No. 6 UC Santa Barbara men's water polo (6-1) split its two games on Saturday at the NorCal Invitational, which were held at Spieker Pool. The Gauchos defeated No. 11 UC San Diego, 16-7, before suffering a tough loss to No. 2 UCLA, 10-4.
The Gauchos continued their 2013-2014 season as UCSB took on No. 11 UC San Diego in their first game of the day. UCSB opened the first quarter with three goals in three minutes to take the lead. The Gauchos were able to score three more goals to end the first quarter up 6-0. From there, UCSB kept the Tritons scoreless until half, ending the second quarter up 10-0. The Gauchos never looked back, and ultimately cruised to a 16-7 win over the Tritons with an impressive six goals from senior
Matt Gronow.
Coming off their earlier victory over No. 11 UC San Diego, the Gauchos faced No. 2 UCLA later in the day. Junior Derek Shoemaker led the team with two goals. Sophomore Chris Whitelegge was able to tally 14 saves to help UC Santa Barbara on the defensive end. Two more Gauchos netted a goal each, but it wasn't enough as the Bruins secured their victory, ending the game 10-4.
UCSB will play Long Beach State tomorrow at the NorCal Invitational at 9:25 a.m.
The Gauchos are now 6-1 on the season, with one game left to play in the 2013 NorCal Invitational.
