SAN DIEGO, Calif. – No. 6 UC Santa Barbara started the day with a win over No. 14 UC San Diego 11-7 and gained another victory over the Navy 16-7 later that day.
The Gauchos took on UC San Diego in their first game of the day. UCSB opened the game with two goals from junior Derek Shoemaker and sophomore Nicholas Jordan in less than two minutes of play. The Tritons quickly came back with two goals of their own to tie the game 2-2 with 5:10 left in the first quarter. UCSB was able to score three more goals to the Tritons two to take the lead 5-4 after the first period.
UC Santa Barbara opened the second period with three consecutive goals. Sophomore Chris Whitelegge was able to keep UCSD to one goal in the second quarter, helping the Gauchos on the defensive end. UCSB scored three goals in the second half, ultimately leading to their 11-7 win over UC San Diego.
Coming off an earlier victory over UC San Diego, the Gauchos came out ready to play against the Navy. Nicholas Jordan opened the game with a quick goal for the Gauchos. Both teams went back and forth with goals, ending the first quarter tied 3-3.
UCSB started the second period fired up, scoring three goals to take the lead 6-3 after the first half. The Gauchos opened the second half with three consecutive goals before the Navy was able to sneak two goals in. The Navy was able to score two more goals, but it wasn't enough as the Gauchos cruised to a 16-7 victory.
The Gauchos are now 11-2 overall. UC Santa Barbara will continue its season on October 12, when they head to Irvine to participate in the SoCal Tournament.
