Gauchos Get Win Over Broncos 4-1

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- The UC Santa Barbara Gauchos (5-4) played only singles Sunday, as the rain threatened to cancel the match as a whole, but they were still able to get the 4-1 win over the Santa Clara Broncos (2-4).

The match was pushed from 11AM to 10 AM in order to avoid the rain that was forecasted to impede on play, so the Gauchos went to work on their singles matches to start the day.

First player off was Natalie Da Silveira, who handily took care of her opponent Chelby Cooke 6-0, 6-1 on court two.

Not long after, Luisa Ortiz Candido got her third singles win of the weekend, defeating Riley Morgan 6-1, 6-2 at the number six position.

Stacy Yam was also a winner for the Gauchos, defeating Danielle Zinn 6-1, 6-3 on court five.

With three matches left to play, the Gauchos were up 3-0. However, a quick rain came down and soaked the courts, causing matches to come to a halt.

Before the rain delay, Jaimee Gilbertson was in her third set. She had won the first 6-2, and lost the second 6-1. At the time of the delay, she was up 5-3 in the third set.

Melissa Baker was up in her second set at the time of the delay 5-2 after losing the first 7-5 on court four.

April Scatliffe, playing number three for the Gauchos was down 3-2 in the second set after losing the first 6-4.

The rain stopped and the Gaucho players ran out onto the court, using giant squeegees to soak up the water to dry the courts as quickly as possible. After about an hour delay, the courts were dry enough to finish play.

Gilbertson was able to come about onto the court and clinch the win for the Gauchos. The final score was 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 over Nabila Farah.

Scatliffe wasn't able to come back, and after tying the second set at 6-6, dropped the tie breaker for the Broncos only victory on the day. Daniella Silva was the winner after a 6-4, 7-6 (3) match.

Bakers match went unfinished since the Gauchos had already clinched the victory.

Assistant coach Erica Cano was plaeased with the way that the team rebounded the past two days after their loss to Oregon on Friday.

"It seemed to inspire them to play even better," she said. "They played like the team they want to be."

The Gauchos are off until Mar 5, but Cano says they will remain focus during their time off.

"We're going to take a couple deserved days off and come back with a good practive week, focuisng on fitness and individual on-court needs."

UCSB takes on Fresno State in Fresno, Calif. on Mar 5 at 5PM.
