SANTA CLARA
Alex Pingree pitched a gem and MeShalon Moore hit a game-clinching two-run double, as the Gauchos opened the weekend with a 3-1 win over Santa Clara.
Pingree tossed her second straight complete game victory in limiting the Broncos to just three hits and an unearned run. The junior also tied a season-high with six strikeouts.
Moore hit a pair of doubles, including the game-winner, and paced the team with two RBI. Arianna Palomares extended her hitting streak to five games with three singles, while Samantha Stark collected a pair of base knocks.
UCSB made quick work of Santa Clara, as the game was over in just an hour and forty-five minutes.
DeJanee Moore got the Gauchos on the board first with a sac bunt in the top of the second. Her sister MeShalon led off with a double and moved to third on Stark's single to left field. DeJanee came through with the scoring play in laying down a bunt perfectly down the first base line to give UCSB the 1-0 lead.
The Broncos scored their only run of the game two innings later on a groundout to second base. While the score remained gridlocked at 1-1, Pingree retired six of the following seven batters she faced heading into the seventh inning.
MeShalon Moore secured UCSB's win with two runners in scoring position and two outs. She blasted her double to left field to clear the bases and put the Gauchos on top 3-1.
Pingree breezed through the bottom of the seventh in a three up, three down effort.
MANHATTAN
Lena Mayer checked in with arguably her best pitching performance of the season, as the Gauchos cruised to a 5-2 victory, sweeping their way through the first day of the Santa Clara Round Robin.
Mayer checked in with 6 1/3 innings of work after Ashley Ludlow allowed a two-run homer in the top of the first. The freshman looked anything but in limiting the Jaspers to just one hit and two walks.
After Elena Bowman hit a two-run jack, Ludlow secured the inning's second out with a fly out to center. However, she allowed a single to center to Amanda Paxson, which cued the pitching change. Mayer quickly retired her first batter with a fly out.
UCSB wasted no time in getting to work on offense with two runs in the bottom of the first. Kristen Clark first singled and stole first before she advanced to third following a Palomares groundout. MeShalon Moore brought her across home plate with a single up the middle, while Stark followed Moore with an RBI single of her own hit to right field.
After Mayer mowed through three batters in the top of the second, the Gaucho offense continued to roll with two more runs. Stacy Cavazos delivered a double to get on base and beat the throw to third after Clark's fielder's choice. The UCSB left field picked up her second swipe of the game to move into scoring position in time for Hinojosa's RBI single to second base. Clark would later score when she beat a throw after Palomares hit a fielder's choice, making the score 4-2.
Capping off UCSB's efforts at the plate, DeJanee Moore poked a single through the left side to send MeShalon Moore home from third.
