Box Score HONOLULU — A day after blanking Hawai'i in the series opener, No. 7 UC Santa Barbara was shut out in Saturday night's affair at Les Murakami Stadium, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Rainbow Warriors.
The loss dropped UCSB to 30-10 overall on the season with a 7-4 mark in conference play. Hawai'i improved to 15-25, 6-8.
Junior southpaw Justin Jacome was the tough luck loser for the Gauchos, falling to 6-2 despite a solid start that saw him allow just a single earned run on five hits with seven punchouts and no walks in eight innings of work.
Kaeo Aliviado provided the big hit for the home team, grounding a base hit through the right side in the sixth inning to score leadoff man Stephen Ventimilia for the game's only run.
Senior third baseman Peter Maris and junior first baseman Robby Nesovic each had two hits for the Gauchos, but they were the only UCSB batters to record a base knock on the day. Maris extended his team-best hitting streak to 15 games with a pair of singles.
With four successful sacrifice efforts on the day, UCSB had plenty of chances to push across a run, but unfortunately the Gauchos couldn't come up with a big hit, going 0-9 with runners in scoring position.
UCSB's best chance to score came in the sixth, as they loaded the bases with just one out on an error, walk, and fielder's choice. However, a pair of subsequent groundouts ended the inning without any damage being done.
Tyler Brashears starred on the mound for UH, allowing just three hits while pitching into the eigth. Quintin Torres-Costa finished off the combined four-hitter, locking down his fourth save of the season with an inning and a third of scoreless relief.
UCSB will send sophomore standout Shane Bieber (5-3, 2.12 ERA) to the mound in Sunday's rubber match, with first pitch set for 4:05 PDT.
