HONOLULU - Sonest Furtado's goal in the 86th minute, her second of the match, lifted the University of Hawai'i to a 2-1 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night.
The Gauchos (4-7-4 overall, 0-3-1 in the Big West) took a 1-0 lead at the 16:00 mark when Madeline Gibson's corner kick was knocked home by Sydney Magnin for her first goal of the season.
Furtado tied the score near the end of the first half, taking a pass from Tia Furuta and then beating the UCSB defense and goalkeeper Brittney Rogers in the 45th minute.
In physical second half that featured five yellow cards, the score remained 1-1 into the 86th minute when Furtado struck again. This time she took a pass from Keala Parker-Lee behind the Gaucho defense and fired a shot past Maddie Julian, who started the second half, inside the near post for the game-winner.
UCSB's best opportunity to force overtime came with less than 30 seconds to play. The Gauchos were awarded a free kick just outside the 18-yeard box and Shaelan Murison pounded a dangerous shot on goal but Rainbow Wahine goalkeeper Alexis Mata came up with her seventh save of the match to assure her team's victory.
Santa Barbara had a 14-10 shot advantage, including 8-5 in shots on goal, but Mata's seven saves proved to be the difference. The tandem of Rogers and Julian totaled three saves, including a spectacular diving save by Rogers on a shot by Raisa Strom-Okimoto midway through the first half. UCSB also had a 9-2 edge in corner kicks, including 6-0 in the first half.
The loss extends the Gauchos winless streak to four in a row.
UCSB will return home to host Long Beach State on Sunday, Oct. 15 in a 1:00 p.m. match at Harder Stadium. To purchase tickets to that, or any other match, click here.
