Box Score DAVIS, Calif. - Freshman Christine Maurer scored her sixth goal of the season in the eighth minute and UC Santa Barbara made the goal stand-up, handing UC Davis a 1-0 defeat on Thursday afternoon.
The Gauchos (6-7-4 overall, 2-3-1 in the Big West) have now won consecutive games for the first time since the first two games of the season. The Aggies (4-10-1, 3-1-1) had their four-match unbeaten string ended.
UCSB's goal came at the 7:41 mark when Sydney Magnin passed a ball from the center of the field to Mallory Hromatko who was running down the left sideline. Hromatko pounded a cross from near the sideline into the box and Maurer headed it into the left post. Her six goals are the most by a freshman since Hromatko had nine two seasons ago.
UC Davis put heavy pressure on the Gauchos throughout much of the second half, but were unable to come up with the equalizer. The Aggies best chance came with about 15 minutes left when UCSB goalkeeper Maddie Julian tried to leap in the air to collect the ball but she was unable to control it. Mahlah Catline was their for Davis, but her shot was cleared off the line by a defender, preserving the shutout.
The Aggies last chance came at the 89:18 mark when Monet Kunz found a loose ball above the top of the box, straight out, and pounded a shot that went just outside the right post.
Santa Barbara outshot the Aggies by a 9-7 count overall, including 3-2 in shots on goal. Maurer, in fact, had all three of her team's shots on frame. Julian had a pair of saves, as did UC Davis's Alexis Smith.
UCSB will play its final road game on Sunday, Oct. 22 when it travels to Cal State Fullerton for a 5:00 p.m. match against the front-running Titans. The contest will be carried on ESPN3 and the Watch ESPN app.
