Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - In the season finale for both teams, UC Santa Barbara and Cal Poly battled to a 1-1 tie on Sunday afternoon at Harder Stadium.
The Gauchos (6-8-5 overall, 2-4-2 in the Big West) scored their goal in the first half while the Mustangs (7-9-3, 2-4-2) tallied theirs in the secUCond half.
UCSB's goal was scored, fittingly, by defender Kate Shoemaker, one of five seniors playing their final match. The goal was the first of the season for Shoemaker. She came close to scoring on a second header in the second half, but the shot deflected off of an opposing player.
At the 19:13 mark, Shoemaker headed Colby Parker's corner kick past Cal Poly goalkeeper Sophia Brown to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Mustangs had a couple golden opportunities to tie the score in the first half, but couldn't find the back of the net. In the waning minutes of the half, Megan Abutin fired a shot from the left side that was saved by UCSB senior goalkeeper Brittney Rogers. Georgina Stiegeler pounced on the rebound with a rocket from point-blank range, but Rogers saved that shot as well and the score remained 1-1.
Cal Poly didn't waste much time tying the match in the second half.
In the 48th minute, Gaucho Jessica Clegg committed a foul and was given a yellow card. The foul came just above the left corner of the 18-yard box. Chelsea Barry took the free kick and fired a shot over the UCSB wall, but after making the save, Rogers couldn't collect the rebound and Emily Hansen was right there to stuff it back home, tying the score.
UCSB generally dominated the play most of the match, outshooting the Mustangs 19-5, including 12-3 in shots on goal. Brown, however, was up to the task as she collected 11 saves.
Senior Amanda Ball, finished the season with 10 goals and her career with 27, eighth all-time, had seven shots overall, including four on frame.
In addition to Shoemaker, Rogers and Ball, Chace Schornstein and goalkeeper Maddie Julian, who did not enter the match, were taking part in their final contests as Gauchos.
