No. 17 UCSB Splits the Day with Win, Loss at Barbara Kalbus Invitational

IRVINE, Calif. – After a loss to UCLA Friday night, UC Santa Barbara would try to rebound for their Saturday doubleheader at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational.

To start the day, the Gauchos were looking for revenge against San Diego State after a previous loss to the Aztecs earlier in the season. From start to finish, it would be an intense battle in the pool for both the Gauchos and the Aztecs. Early, UCSB's established sophomore scorer Sarah Snyder would fire one in the net in the first for the Gauchos. By the end of the quarter though, the Aztecs would have a 2-1 lead.

As the game progressed and the clock winded down in the later quarters, the Gauchos held tough defensively with goalie Kenzi Snyder in the net deflecting and saving shot after shot. In the meantime, UCSB needed someone to take charge offensively as the 4th quarter clock ticked away. Gaucho attacker Natalie Selin did just that. Selin would go on to score two late goals in a heroic effort to not only give the Gauchos the lead, but seal a big win over the Aztecs. The final score, 5-4 UCSB.

Later in the day, USCB would get yet another shot at a previous school that beat them earlier in the year, the Michigan Wolverines. In the first half, the Gauchos and the Wolverines would trade blow after blow scoring after one another. Sarah Snyder and Sarah Kreiser would hop on Michigan with two early goals in the first, but Julia Seller and Kathy Rogers of UM would even the score. However, Kate Pipkin would score early on in the 2nd quarter to give the Gauchos the 3-2 lead. By the end of the half, the match would be all tied up at three.

From there, the game would slow down in the 3rd quarter with only one Wolverine goal from Sofie Pontre. The 4th and final quarter though would be fast a furious. Four goals total would result in the exciting quarter of play. Pipkin would score a 2nd goal to begin the last quarter of play, but UM's Maddy Steere would find the net with a penalty shot with 5:39 left to play. Almost a minute later, Sofie Pontre would score yet another goal to put the Wolverines up two. With 1:25 left to play, Michigan added another, and despite a late goal from Pipkin, would take the game 7-5.

Play continues tomorrow at the Corona del Mar Pool where the Gauchos will face LMU at 11:30 a.m.
