Smith Finishes Third, Gauchos Sixth at John Burns Invitational

LIHUE, Hawai'i – Zach Smith finished with an 8-under par 208 to finish by himself in third-place, but as a team, UC Santa Barbara fell from a tie for eighth into 16th on the final day of the John Burns Intercollegiate at the Wailua Golf Course in Lihue, Kauai, Hawai'i on Saturday.

Smith began the day in a tie for second-palce and shot a 1-under par in the final round to finish with his 8-under par and third-place. It was his best tournament of the season. BYU's Peter Kuest, who started the day tied for fourth, carded a 4-under par 68 on Saturday to win the tournament by one shot over Texas A&M's Walker Lee, who began the day tied for 10th. 

Brett Bennett was UCSB's next highest finisher. He carded a 1-over par 217 and tied for 43rd. Brandon Bueno tied for 72nd with a 6-over par 222 and Tyler See tied for 84th with a 10-over par 226. Ryan Cuenca was 111th with a 22-over par 238.

Arizona State won the team title by three shots over Texas A&M, five over Duke, six ahead of North Carolina and 11 up on UNLV. The Sun Devils finished with a 24-under par 840.

The Gaucchos return to the links on Mar. 4 and Mar. 5 when they play at the Sacramento State Invitational in Elk Grove, Calif.
