Gauchos Swallow Up Zags for Second Straight

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.- For its second straight win, the UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team put the clamps on No. 38 Gonzaga with a 4-2 victory on Thursday afternoon.

With its second win in a row, Santa Barbara improves to 7-5 in dual matches while Gonzaga evens out at 6-6 in non-conference play.

"Gonzaga is a really tough team that puts up a fight every time," said Head Coach Simon Thibodeau. "We were resilient and tough today."

UCSB set the tone early with a clean-cut 6-2 win by Tiffany Lagarde and Stephanie Yamada against Kate Ketels and Haruna Tsuruta from court three as Yamada made her return to the floor after missing yesterday's 6-1 win over Marquette.

Gonzaga battled back with a strong finish on court one as No. 25 Sophia Whittle and Graciela Rosas defeated Juliana Valero and Anastasia Goncharova with a 6-2 final in favor of the Bulldogs.

To secure the doubles point, Sara Komer and Vlada Medvedcova bested Amit Lev Ari and Lise Sentenac with a 6-4 result from court two.

Although UCSB surrendered the doubles point for just the third time this season, Santa Barbara turned it on in singles play.

National No. 7 Sophia Whittle cleaned up for the only Gonzaga singles win of the day from court one with a 6-3, 6-1 decision against Elizaveta Volodko to give the Zags a 2-0 lead, but from there it was all UCSB.

Lagarde brought the Gauchos back into it with a 6-2, 6-4 victory in the three-spot to topple Domonique Garley and it was her fellow freshman that tied this one up.

Anastasia Goncharova conquered Sara Komer on court six with a 6-0, 7-5 triumph which tied the match up at two points a piece.

Amit Lev Ari, who has won five of her past six singles matches, put UCSB on top with a 7-5, 6-3 stinger against Graciela Rosas while playing in the two-hole.

From court five, Lise Sentenac put the finishing touches on the victory with a 4-6, 7-5, 6-1 trophy finish in a thriller to pass by Haruna Tsuruta and deliver the Gauchos second straight win in its penultimate non-conference dual match.

The game on court four went unfinished as Juliana Valero was in the lead against Vlada Medvedcova 7-6 (2), 0-6, 5-3, unfinished when UCSB secure the victory.

The UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team has a two week break before heading down south to take on No. 5 UCLA on Wednesday March 27 at 1 p.m.
