Sizzling CSUN Too Much for Gauchos, 79-67

Box Score

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Lamine Diane scored 26 points and Terrell Gomez added 22 to lead CSUN to a 79-67 win over visiting UC Santa Barbara on Thursday night. Max Heidegger finished with a season-high 30 for the Gauchos.

UCSB (13-8 overall, 2-4 Big West) led 14-8 after going on a 14-3 run earl in the first half, but couldn't keep up with the Matadors (9-14, 4-3) who beat them for the second time in eight days.

The Matadors ended the half with a 27-12 run to turn a 14-8 UCSB lead into a 35-26 advantage for themselves. In fact, until Devearl Ramsey drained a three-pointer with 1.7 seconds to play, the run had been 27-9 and the Gauchos had missed 11 out of 12 field goal attempts. Gomez, who was scoreless for the first 17 minutes, made all three of his field goal attempts and had six points in the final 2:53.

After CSUN scored the first basket of the second half to take a 37-26 lead, Santa Barbara used a 12-4 run to get back into the game, cutting the lead to 41-38, but the Matadors responded with a 10-3 stretch to reclaim a 51-41 lead with 11:20 to play. Diane had six of the points on a pair of three-pointers from above the key.

UCSB tried to chip away at the deficit, pulling within 59-51 on a fancy layup by Heidegger with 5:41 to play, but Diane responded with his third three-pointer of the half to push the lead back to 62-51.

Gomez's second three-pointer of the game with 2:53 to play helped the Matadors take their biggest lead of the game at 68-54 with 4:13 left. The teams traded three-pointers over the next three possessions with Heidegger hitting two for UCSB and Brown one for CSUN, making the score 71-60.

Heidegger's third three of the game and half, with 49 seconds remaining, made it 73-64, but the Gauchos would get no closer. The senior made his fourth triple with 34 seconds on the clock to cap a 22-point half and his first 30-point game since November of 2017.

"Max played his heart out," Pasternack said. "He had a great second half."

Although CSUN didn't get hot from three-point range until late, it finished the game at 8-for-16, 50.0% from long range and 31-of-54 overall, 57.4%. The Gauchos, meanwhile, struggled with their shooting, particularly in the first half when they made just 40.9%. They finished the game at 44.7% overall and 42.9% from three-point range. They equaled their season-high with nine three-point baskets.

Heidegger made 9-of-15 field goals overall and 4-for-8 from three-point range. In addition to his 30 points, Amadou Sow added a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds despite playing just 25:02 because of first half foul trouble. He made his lone three-point attempt.

Diane made 10-of-19 field goals overall and 3-for-5 from three-point territory for his 26 points. Gomez scored all 22 of his points in the last 23 minutes of the game and he was 7-of-13 from the floor, including 2-for-5 from three-point range.

The game was relatively sloppy with CSUN committing 13 turnovers and Santa Barbara 17.

"We had seven assists and 17 turnovers," Pasternack said. "You're not going to win a lot of games with that ratio."

The Gauchos remain on the road and will travel to Long Beach State on Saturday, Feb. 1 for a 4:00 p.m. game that will be aired on ESPN3.
