SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team lost 4-3 to the San Diego Toreros on Monday at the Recreation Center courts, bringing the Gaucho's record to 5-9 on the season. The Toreros, buoyed by their hard-earned doubles point, proved able to withstand comeback wins on courts four and six by the Gauchos in order to win their third straight match.
Head Coach Marty Davis was disappointed with the loss, but felt pleased with the intensity and competitiveness of the match. "It was a heck of a match against a very good team," he said following the loss. Highlights of the match included the effort in the comeback wins by Joshua Williams and Joseph Rotheram; also impressive was No. 16 Joseph Guillin's victory over No. 102 August Holmgren in singles.
The doubles point escaped the Gauchos once again, with the number one and three teams for the Gauchos unable to guide themselves to victory on Monday. Josh Williams and Alex Soto had a 4-1 lead disappear on them, and the pair of Krustev and Rotheram went unfinished at a 5-5 tie.
Krustev's match came down to the third and final set, but he saw his four game winning streak end at the hands of Gui Osorio. After back and forth wins by each team, Sunday's hero Alejandro Vedri had a chance to complete the comeback on court three. Unfortunately for UCSB, he couldn't pull off what would've been his second clincher in as many days, losing 6-3 in the final set.
The Gauchos will face Utah State on Friday at 1:30 pm.
