CLAREMONT, Calif. – On the eve of its Big West Conference opener, the UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team (11-8) took down Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Pomona-Pitzer in emphatic fashion at the 2020 Claremont Convergence tournament on Friday afternoon at Haldeman Pool.
UCSB 15, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 6
A double-hat trick from senior co-captain Sarah Snyder helped the Gauchos sink the Athenas in the Friday matinee between the two squads.
UCSB leapt out to a 5-1 lead after the first quarter and was up 10-2 by halftime, at one point having gone on a 5-0 run inside the first half.
Caitlyn Snyder and Courtney Heydorff tacked on a pair of goals in the matchup, and Amanda Legaspi, Mollie Simmons, Claire Kelly, Reese Oliver, and Morgan Lewis each rattled the back of the cage with a goal apiece.
UCSB 17, Pomona-Pitzer 7
Nine different players scored for the Gauchos in their victory over the Sagehens.
UCSB scored 10 unanswered goals, led by a pair from both Caitlyn Snyder and Legaspi, before Pomona-Pitzer responded on the powerplay just under the four minute mark in the second period.
Buck, who made seven saves, and the Gauchos comfortably cruised to victory in their tournament finale as they carried a 12-1 lead into the half and a 15-3 advantage into the fourth.
Legaspi scored four goals, while both Danielle Kauahi and Caitlyn Snyder put together hat tricks.
Caitlyn Snyder also managed to add three assists in the victory.
The Gauchos return to action Saturday at noon against CSUN, in their first home game since the opening-weekend UCSB Winter Invitational.
