SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -
The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team swept the Utah State Aggies 4-0 in their match on Friday. Now 6-9 on the season, UCSB will face Drake University in two days to complete the week's slate of matches. The win in doubles represents the first win in the previous four matches for the Gauchos.
Alejandro Vedri and Joseph Guillin were first off on court two, winning 6-4. The tandem usually starts on the number one courts, but they earned their win against Arvid Hjalte and Sergiu Bucur on court two.
Number ones Joseph Rotheram and Victor Krustev claimed the doubles point for the home team after they went 6-4 as well. Felipe Acosta and Javier Ruiz kept things close but eventually the Gaucho's junior duo pulled away. The match on court three was left undecided after Joshua Williams and Alex Soto battled Roko Savin and Christian Holmes to a 4-4 draw.
Krustev (court two vs Bucur) and Williams (court five vs Holmes) won their first sets, 6-2 and 6-4 respectively. However, it was Vedri, racing out to a 6-3, 3-0 lead by staying on top of his opponent's serves, who closed out with a 6-1 win to be the first off in singles.
Despite his slow start compared to the Gauchos on two and five, Rotheram was the second in singles to claim victory. He defeated Hjalte 6-4, 6-3 to bring UCSB within one for the sweep.
Krustev was finally able to regain momentum and after losing the first two games, rallied with six of his own to claim another 6-2 set and the match for the Gauchos.
Guillin fell behind a set to Acosta, 6-3, and trailed 3-2 in the second set. His form came around and the senior co-captain nearly went up 6-4, but the match was called moments before he could score the point.
Wilhelm Saiga was on court six, and he played a great first set, going up 6-0 on Savin. His opponent worked a 6-3 second set to even the contest, but the match was called with Saiga leading 1-0 in the third set.
The Gauchos are set to face Drake University at 3:00pm on Saturday at the Rec Cen courts.
