JURUPA VALLEY, Calif. - Playing in its first golf tournament in nearly a full year, UC Santa Barbara finished in an eighth-place tie with Cal State Fullerton at The Joust at Goose Creek Golf Club in Jurupa Valley, Calif., on Tuesday.

The Gauchos, like all other programs in the NCAA, ceased playing in March of 2020 due to COVID-19. Many programs re-started in early-February and now UCSB has started as well.

Freshman Andrew Ricci, making his debut, used a 1-under par final round to finish with a 9-over par 219, jumping from a tie for 25th-place into a tie for 11th-place with Utah Valley's Brady McKinlay and North Dakota State's Jack Johnson. He was the team's top finisher. Junioir Jacob Montes, a transfer from Palomar College, finished with a 12-over par 222, good for a tie for 23rd.

Another freshman, Blake McGovern was next with a 15-over par 225, tying for 36th. Seniors Brandon Bueno (+18, 228, tied for 45th) and Matt Moomjian (+23, 233, tied for 66th) rouned out the Gauchos' finishers.

Loyola Marymount easily outdistanced the rest of the 13-team field with a 12-over par 852, 25 shots ahead of second-place Washington State, 26 ahead of third-place Idaho, 30 in front of fourth-place Pacific, and 31 ahead of fifth-place Utah Valley.

LMU also had the top-three individual finishers. Gavin Cohen shot a 1-under par, 209 to win medalist honors. He was the only player in the field with an under-par score. Riley Lewis and Cameron Meeks each shot a 4-over par 214. Ethan Davidson of Sacramento State and Sean Mullan of Idaho tied for fourth to round at the top-five at 5-over par.

UCSB will return to action on Monday-Tuesday, Mar. 1-2 at the Sacramento State Invitational. The tournament will be played at Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove, Calif.
