ELK GROVE, Calif. – UC Santa Barbara freshman Ethan Barnes was 3-under par and tied for fifth-place when play was suspended in the second round due to darkness at the Sacramento State Invitational on Monday.
Barnes shot a 2-under par 70 in Monday's first round and he was 1-under through 12 holes in the second around when play was stopped.
After a rocky start, the Gauchos were able to pull into a tie with the host school, Sacramento State, for a 10th-place tie. UCSB was 4-under par in the second round after carding a 15-over par 303 in the first round.
Barnes was followed by another trio of freshmen for the Gauchos. Blake McGovern is tied for 50th at 4-over par, John Bush is tied for 61st at 6-over and Andrew Ricci is tied for 66th at 7-over. Junior transfer Jacob Montes is tied with Ricci at 7-over par. Ricci's 2-under par through 12 holes in the second round helped him make up for a 9-over par first round.
Long Beach State ended the first day leading the tournament at 15-under par, closely followed by Loyola Marymount at 11-under. Pacific (-5) and UC Irvine (-1) were the only other teams to record under-par scores when play was halted.
Clay Seeber of Long Beach State leads the tournament at 8-under, followed by Riley Lewis and Gavin Cohen of LMU who are each at 7-under.
