LONG BEACH, Calif.— After topping No. 10 Long Beach State in Rob Gym last night, the Beach got its revenge on No. 3 UC Santa Barbara Sunday evening defeating the Gauchos in four sets 23-25, 25-21, 25-20, 21-25. This was the first road match of the year for UCSB.

Randy DeWeese led all players with 17 kills to go along with five digs and a pair of blocks. Dayne Chalmers had a career-high 17 digs, with Ryan Wilcox following close behind with 14 of his own and setter Casey McGarry posted 34 assists.

The first set was the closest contest with each team trading off the lead throughout most of the points and neither team taking more than a three-point lead. Despite trailing 16-13, the visiting Gauchos fought back to post a 12-7 run that would give them the opener 25-23.

From there the Beach offense was able to mark the Gaucho defense posting a .333 hitting percentage in set two, a .323 in set three, and a match-high .464 in the fourth and final frame. Meanwhile, Long Beach held UCSB to a sub .180 mark in both of the middle sets to gain the lead and ride the momentum into its first win of the season.

UCSB kept each set close at the jump but would eventually see Long Beach start to break away in the later points to hand the Gauchos their fourth loss in five matches.

UC Santa Barbara will look to get back on track against CSUN next weekend.
