No. 12 Gauchos Edged in Non-Conference Tilt at No. 10 UC San Diego, 6-5

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team (3-5, 1-1 Big West) fell 6-5 in its non-conference contest at UC San Diego on Saturday at Canyonview Aquatics Center.

Redshirt sophomore attacker Sarah Owens and junior utility Caitlyn Snyder each scored two goals while junior attacker Dani Kauahi recorded one for the Gauchos in their third consecutive loss.

UC San Diego went ahead first with 3:47 left in the first period after Tera Richardson found the back of the cage on the powerplay.

Owens got the Gauchos back on level terms with a powerplay goal of her own at the 2:58 mark.

All of the action in the first period of play boiled down to the final minute of the frame, when Annika Arroyo scored for UCSD, then Snyder replied for the Gauchos 13 seconds later, but not before Karis Couch would give the Tritons the final say with a goal with 10 seconds remaining to put the hosts up 3-2.

However, UCSB's Kauahi scored the lone goal for either team in the second period, ensuring the game was tied at 3-3 at the half.

In the third period, the Gauchos earned their first lead of the game when Snyder found the back of the cage with 2:19 left in the quarter.

The game slowed down significantly until UCSD's Sydney Boland scored with under four minutes left to go in regulation to tie the game.

The deadlock wasn't broken until Ciara Franke, who scored the game-winner on Friday night in UCSD's 7-6 sudden-death overtime win, gave the Tritons the go-ahead goal with 28 seconds left to play.

UCSB wasn't going away without a fight, though, and Owens scored her second goal to tie the game back up at five-all with just 11 seconds left on the board.

The game seemed destined for overtime, but UCSD's Arroyo snuck in a last-gasp game-winner with two seconds remaining as the hosts completed their sweep of the Gauchos in the back-to-back.

The Gauchos will have a bye next week before gearing up to take on Hawai'i at home on Saturday, April 10 and Sunday, April 11.
