UCSB Drops a Pair of Five-Set Matches to No. 21 Pepperdine and Kansas State

SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— The UCSB Women's Volleyball team saw a pair of quality opponents in its Saturday doubleheader as the Gauchos lost in five sets to both Kansas State and No. 21 Pepperdine.

Match One: Kansas State 3, UCSB 2

ON THE STAT SHEET

  • Abrielle Bross led notched a career-high 18 kills on a .484 hitting percentage to lead the Gauchos
  • Three others joined her in double digits with Michelle Ohwobete notching 15 and both Deni Wilson and Tasia Farmer having 10
  • Rowan Ennis posted an errorless 9-0-16 line for a .562 hitting percentage and was only bested by fellow middle Wilson who had a 10-0-16 line for a .625
  • Macall Peed entered as the new libero in the third set and made a huge impact collecting 15 digs and a 1.000 reception percentage
  • Grace Kloss (33) and Grace McIntosh (28) teamed up on the setting efforts and combined for 61 assists
  • UCSB out-hit K-State .340 to .321

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • Despite falling behind 5-1 the Gauchos mounted a 13-8 run to take the lead
  • Ennis and Bross each sent down four kills
  • Down 21-17 K-State closed on an 8-0 run to take the set

Second Set

  • The set saw six ties and three lead changes
  • Kansas State led by as much as eight at 18-10 until the Gauchos went on a 10-3 run to cut the Wildcat lead to just one
  • A 4-1 run for K-State would end the set and put the team up 2-0

Third Set

  • UCSB holds K-State to a match-low .158 hitting percentage
  • Peed enters in the libero jersey and makes an immediate impact scooping seven digs
  • Ohwobete finds six kills on a .667 clip
  • After going up 7-6 the Gauchos never gave the lead back to the Wildcats
  • The Gauchos finish the set on a 7-2 run capped off by Ennis

Fourth Set

  • Set four saw the most ties (8) and the most lead changes (4) of the match
  • Bross erupts for six kills during key rallies
  • UCSB swings a match-high .417 and converts on 70% of its sideout opportunities
  • The two teams met at 20-20 and a flurry of kills from Bross and Ohwobete lifted the Gauchos to the win

Fifth Set

  • The Gauchos never led in the final set but forced K-State to play till the end nearly forcing extra points
  • K-State converts 11-of-14 sideout attempts

Match Two: No. 21 Pepperdine 3, UCSB 2

ON THE STAT SHEET

  • Wilson, Bross, and Tasia Farmer each had 13 kills for the Gauchos
  • UCSB held undefeated Pepperdine to its second-lowest hitting percentage of the season at .258
  • Peed started at libero and scooped 24 digs
  • Wilson fell one-short of her career high with seven total blocks

HOW IT HAPPENED

First Set

  • UCSB jumped out to an early lead and held until the Waves tied the set at 22-22
  • Ennis and Tasia Farmer answered with late kills but Pepperdine ended the set on back-to-back kills
  • Six different Gauchos notched multiple kills
  • Peed and Sophie Messinger each found five digs

Second Set

  • The second set was all Gauchos as the host team outhit the visitors .419 to .276, converted of 88% of its sideout opportunities, and had a match-high 17 kills
  • UCSB held Pepperdine to its lowest set score of the season at 16
  • The Gauchos led from 4-3 on and used three late kills from Farmer to win the second set

Third Set

  • UCSB holds Pepperdine to a .167 hitting percentage and Wilson notched six kills
  • After falling behind by as much as five the Gauchos claw their way back to tie the set at 22-22
  • Kills from Wilson, Messinger, and Ohwobete sealed the set for the Gauchos in extra points

Fourth Set

  • The Gauchos never led in the fourth set as the Waves held them to a .075 hitting percentage
  • Peed had five more digs 

Fifth Set

  • The Gauchos got the first point of the final set but Pepperdine notched a 5-0 run to take control of the set
  • The Waves converted 5-of-7 sideout opportunities
