How It Happened
- The Gauchos got on the board in the top of the 1st as senior Jason Willow walked, stole second, and was driven in on an RBI single by junior Christian Kirtley. Loyola Marymount wasted no time scoring two of its own in the bottom half to take a 2-1 lead.
- In the top of the 3rd the Gauchos scored a trio of unearned, two-out runs as Leo Mosby reached on a high infield pop-up that was completely missed by the Lions. Bryce Willits would come in on that play and Kirtley followed with an RBI triple to score Mosby. Kirtley came home on the next at bat with Kyle Johnson roping a double to left center on a full count to make it 4-2. Once again LMU answered in the bottom with a run on a wild pitch.
- Three more came across in the top of the fourth, again on two outs, as the Gauchos loaded the bases for Mosby. The sophomore took a ball off the wall to clear the bases with a 3 RBI double to put his team up 7-3. But once again LMU answered with two more in the bottom half to stay in it 7-5.
- The Gauchos added one more in the 6th, as Johnson took a four-pitch walk with the bases-loaded to bring in Willits, but the Lions gained ground once more scoring a pair to make it a one-run game at 8-7.
- Insurance came in the 8th with Kirtley crushing a lead-off homer, freshman LeTrey McCollum following with an RBI single ripped down the left line, and Willits capping off the scoring efforts with an RBI ground-rule double to make it 11-7.
- The Gauchos weren't done there putting up their biggest number in the top of the 9th, a seven-spots on eight hits punctuated by a Broc Mortenson grand slam and Gianni Bloom solo shot.
