TEMPE, Ariz. – The UC Santa Barbara men's tennis team beat rival Cal Poly 4-1 Sunday afternoon in their third and final match at the Arizona State Eight-Team Tournament. The win meant the Gauchos (7-4) ended up earning third place, having beaten Utah State on Friday and fallen to ASU on Saturday.
How it Happened
- Phillip Jordan and Kai Brady picked up a 6-2 win on doubles court one to start the day off on a positive note for Santa Barbara, but Cal Poly evened it up with a win on court three
- Stefano Tsorotiotis and Alejandro Vedri made sure the doubles point went the Gauchos' way with a 6-3 win on court two
- Moving into the singles portion of the match, Gianluca Brunkow defeated Gary Vardanyan 6-0, 6-4 on court five, while Jordan took down Noah Berry 6-4, 6-1 on court five making it 3-0 overall
- Cal Poly was able to make up a point on court six as Hendrik Inno beat Jonathan Zhang 6-3, 6-2
- Kai Brady made sure no more time was wasted, clinching the match for UCSB with a comeback 3-6, 7-6, 6-1 victory over Fernando Fonseca on court four
- Pablo Masjuan and Victor Krustev's matchups on courts two and three went unfinished
