Women's Water Polo

No. 11 UC San Diego Tops No. 15 UCSB in Overtime

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The No. 15 UC Santa Barbara women's water polo team had its streak of one-goal wins snapped on Sunday in its last game at the Barbara Kalbus Invitational, falling to No. 11 UC San Diego 11-10 in overtime.

Goalscorers: Lyter (4), Halvorson (2), Amaral (1), Snyder (1), Owens (1), Oliver (1)

For the fifth time this year, redshirt freshman attacker Leigh Lyter led the Gauchos (10-7) with four goals, three of which came in the second half. Her goal with 3:27 left in regulation gave UCSB a late 10-9 lead.

However, the Tritons (9-7) got an equalizer from Ciara Franke at the 2:55 mark of the fourth to tie it at 10-10. There would be only one more goal the rest of the way, as UCSD's Kendall Thomas put in the eventual game-winner late in the first period of overtime to seal the win.

This was the first time the Gauchos dropped a close game this year. They were a perfect 4-0 in games decided by a single goal following their 11-10 win over No. 20 San Diego State from the previous day.

Redshirt junior central defender Drew Halvorson was the only other Gaucho to score more than once. Her first of the day came late in the second quarter, cutting into UCSD's largest lead to make it a 6-4 game. Halvorson scored again with 3:31 to go in the third and redshirt sophomore center Reese Olivercapped a 4-1 Gaucho run to tie it at 7-7.

Also finding the back of the net for UCSB were Juju Amaral, Caitlyn Snyder and Sarah Owens. After entering the weekend with one goal to her name this season, Amaral scored in each of the last three games at the invitational, totaling five goals over that span.

Freshman goalkeeper Taylor McEvilly played the entire game, totaling five saves and two steals.

This was Santa Barbara's final competition prior to Big West play. The Gauchos will be back at home on Saturday, Mar. 5 to open its conference schedule in a rematch with No. 7 UC Irvine at 12:00 p.m. at UCSB's Campus Pool.
