PALO ALTO, Calif. – The No. 30 UC Santa Barbara women's tennis team beat No. 24 Stanford 4-3 Tuesday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center. The win is the Gauchos' (9-5) first win over the Cardinals in program history, having been 0-12 previously against the 20-time NCAA Champions.
How it Happened
- The first doubles match went to Stanford, as the No. 7 ranked duo of Angelica Blake and Connie Ma beat Santa Barbara's No. 66 Shakhnoza Khatamova and Elizaveta Volodko 6-1 on court one
- However, UCSB was able to come back to seize the doubles point with 6-2 wins on courts two and three. Camille Kiss and Marta Gonzalez-Ballbe evened things up with a victory over Ana Geller and Niluka Madurawe on court three
- The Gauchos' No. 61 doubles team of Kira Reuter and Amelia Honer secured the point, besting Valencia Xu and Alexandra Yepifanova on court two
- Moving onto singles, Stanford made it 1-1 overall as Sara Choy beat Reuter 6-3, 6-1 on court six
- Santa Barbara then won on courts two and five to make it 3-1 and put them on the brink of victory. On court three, Camille Kiss beat Blake 7-6(5), 6-4 and on court five, Filippa Bruu-Syversen was victorious over No. 86 Xu, 6-4, 6-4
- Stanford then came back to tie things up at three points apiece with three-set wins in the top two singles matchups. No. 14 Yepifanova beat Volodko 6-4, 2-6, 6-2 on court two and No. 11 Ma came back to beat No. 91 Khatamova 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 on court one
- Everything came down to the result on court four, where Honer and India Houghton were engaged in a back-and-forth battle. The composed Honer came out on top to secure the historic victory for the Gauchos, winning 6-2, 4-6, 6-1.
