Box Score SANTA BARBARA, Calif.— No. 10 UCSB Baseball got its revenge on Pepperdine Tuesday night topping the Waves 7-4 in a bullpen game that saw 14 total pitchers.
On the Stat Sheet
- Six different arms graced the mound for the Gauchos including Ryan Harvey who was the opener and tossed two strong innings where he retired all six batters. Nick Welch (3-2) picked up the win with two quality innings in the fifth and sixth and Elliot Gallegos picked up his first career save shutting the door in the ninth.
- Jordan Sprinkle and Broc Mortensen had the two biggest swings of the night as each plated three RBI on their sole hits of the game.
- Christian Kirtley went 2-for-5 with a double and Mason Eng, who started at catcher, doubled his hit total for the year going 2-for-4 with a run.
How It Happened
- In the bottom of the second the Gauchos got going as they loaded the bases with no outs on two HBPs and a walk. A third HBP that plunked Nick Oakley made it a 1-0 nothing game but then Pepperdine managed to get two straight outs and appeared to be limiting the damage. Sprinkle had other ideas rocketing a bases-clearing triple to right center to make it a 4-0 game.
- Pepperdine struck in the fourth by cutting the lead in half on a single swing, a two-run home run to left field.
- With two on and no-outs in the seventh, and right-handed pitcher on the mound for Pepperdine, a struggling Mortensen came in to pinch-hit. On a 1-2 count he sent a towering home run over the right field wall to make it a 7-2 game. It was his 10th of the season which ties the Big West lead.
- The insurance runs proved to be necessary as the Waves hit another two-run homer in the top of the eighth but the Gauchos held on to win it.
Next Up
The Gauchos now head back on the road for more Big West play taking on the reigning champion in UC Irvine this weekend. Game one is set for Friday night at 7:30 PM and will be aired on ESPNU.
