UC Santa Barbara Drops Final Home Match Against Cal State Bakersfield

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The UC Santa Barbara Women's Soccer team dropped their final home contest of the season to Cal State Bakersfield 1-0 Sunday afternoon. A couple of great chances late in the game could not be converted as the Gauchos fell to 4-6-7 overall a 2-4-2 in The Big West.

"The deciding factor in the game was their moment in front of the goal. They got a quality strike on the ball and that was the difference," said Stumpf. "We had multiple looks at the goal but could not get a quality strike. At this level, the margins are very small between winning and losing."

A tightly contested first half saw both teams have some chances in the middle part of the period, but neither side would convert and the teams would head into halftime scoreless. For the Gauchos, shots by O'Callaghan Liu and Meg Burling nearly gave the Gauchos a first-half lead.

Just over a minute into the half the Roadrunners struck. A ball played into the center of the box would be finished to the top left side of the net beating goalkeeper Maddie Buckley. With a lot of time left the Gauchos turned up the intensity on the offensive side of the ball.

In the 74th minute, Jessica Carlson took a corner kick that nearly tied the game up. The kick would swing in on a direct shot from the corner. The Bakersfield goalie saved it but did not corral the ball. Jaclyn Degidio then took a shot but it would be saved by the Roadrunner defense right on the goal line.

In the 83rd minute, Olivia Howard was played a ball into the middle of the box. A solid strike off her right foot froze the goalkeeper but the ball sailed high.

Bakersfield went on to keep the Gauchos off the scoreboard and held on for a 1-0 victory. With the loss, UC Santa Barbara is now tied for sixth in The Big West standings with Long Beach State and UC San Diego. The Beach and Tritons both hold the tiebreaker over the Gauchos.
