Honer defeats U.S. Open Junior Champion, Kiss earns Round One Win

CARY, N.C. – The UC Santa Barbara Women's Tennis team sent three student-athletes across the country to compete in the ITA All-American Championships spanning from Sept. 30 through Oct. 8. The Gauchos continued to build off their previous two tournaments earning quality wins over some quality opponents.
 
Camille Kiss opened up the tournament in the Prequalifying Singles bracket. Kiss would earn a come-from-behind, three-set victory over Maria Juliana Parra Romero from Liberty University. Parra Romero won the first set 6-3, but Kiss would come back to win sets two and three 6-1 and 6-2 respectively.
 
In the round of 64, Kiss was matched up against Ahmani Guichard from UCLA. Kiss would be unable to upset the No. 13-seeded Guichard. Guichard won in straight sets 6-4 and 6-3.
 
In the next round of the ITA All-American Championships, Amelia Honer would take the court in the Qualifying Bracket. Honer the No. 45-ranked singles player would draw Katherine Hui, the No. 2-ranked Newcomer by the ITA. Hui also won the U.S. Open Junior Championships.
 
Honer would win a tough set one 7-5 before Hui won set two 7-6 (5). In the third set, Honer would come away victorious pulling out a 6-3 victory and advancing to the round of 64. In the next round Honer would face Bridget Stammel from Vanderbilt. Honer and Stammel would play a three-set match, ultimately resulting in Stammel's favor. Honer got the early lead winning set one 6-4, but Stammel came back and won the next two sets 6-4 and 7-5 respectively.
 
Honer would quickly turn around and play the Main Draw with doubles partner Kira Reuter. The duo opened their doubles tournament against N.C. State's Anna Zyryanova and Sophie Abrams. Honer and Reuter would drop their opening draw 7-5, 6-3.
 
Honer and Reuter wrapped up their All-American Championships with a match in the consolation bracket. The duo took on Eryn Cayetano and Emma Charney from USC. Unfortunately, they would fall in straight sets both by a score of 6-3.
 
The Gauchos will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Los Angeles for the Women of Troy Invite hosted by USC.
