Cross Country Closes out the Season in Sacramento

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (Nov. 10, 2023) – UC Santa Barbara Cross Country has run their last race of 2023, crossing the finish line for the final time this year and providing a strong finish to an incredible season. The men and women both competed against upwards of 30 other teams from across the West, facing new levels of competition at the meet hosted in Sacramento.

"Both teams put it all out there today," Coach Jason Zarb-Cousin said. "There are so many great teams in the region."

The men ran a 10K instead of their usual 8K, but performed well with the adjustment, coming in 17th out of 29 teams. Ethan Godsey continued his dominant streak, finishing 29th overall out of 201 runners and breaking 30 minutes with an impressive time of 29:51.9. Manan Vats followed up as the second Gaucho to place in 74th with 30:54.9. Parker Simmons came in 96th, with a time of 31:16.5, followed by Gus Marshall and Manny Correia, who finished nearly back-to-back in 128th and 131st places.

The women ran a 6K at 10 a.m., placing 29th out of 31 teams. Stina Johannson led the way as she has all season, coming in 103rd with a time of 21:13.2. She was followed by Isabella Abusaid, who ran in 149th with 21:55.8. Sierra Ransweiler came in 175th, Ava Maier 182nd, and Claire Selleck 201st.

Zarb-Cousin is excited about the future and the development of the team over the coming months.

"It is humbling to know where we stand and what we need to do going forward to continue to develop the program as a whole," Zarb-Cousin said. "The future is bright."

Stanford and Oregon were the top two finishers for the Women's 6K, while Stanford and Gonzaga were the top two teams for the men. They will all advance to the nationals race.
