Honer Wins Back-to-Back Big West Weekly Awards

IRVINE, Calif. (March 8, 2023) — The Big West announced its weekly tennis awards on Wednesday, and for the fourth time this season, Amelia Honer is the conference's Women's Tennis Player of the Week. This is the sophomore's second consecutive week receiving the honor, and the sixth time in her career.

Honer earned big singles wins on court one against both then-No. 35 Oklahoma State and then-No. 62 Loyola Marymount this week, both in straight sets. Against the Cowgirls, Honer defeated then-No. 107 Alana Wolfberg, taking the first set in a tiebreaker, 7-6, before rolling to a 6-1 victory in the second. Two days later against the Lions, Honer again won her opening set in a tiebreaker, then took the second, 6-4. Honer and Kira Reuter also scored a victory together in doubles against Oklahoma State, 6-1.

The Newtown, Pennsylvania native also shot up the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's singles rankings following her recent performance, climbing to No. 40 in the national rankings. It is her highest ranking as a collegiate singles player. Honer and Reuter are also in the ITA doubles rankings, recognized as the No. 21 doubles partnership nationwide.

UC Santa Barbara's tennis programs swept The Big West weekly awards this week, with Honer winning the women's award, while Phillip Jordan earned Men's Tennis Player of the Week. Both the men's and women's teams are at home this week, with Honer and UCSB women's tennis set to take on UC San Diego at the Arnhold Tennis Center on Saturday at 11 a.m.
