Women’s Indoor Track Shines at First Day of Husky Classic

SEATTLE, Wash. – UC Santa Barbara Women's Indoor Track has once again demonstrated their prowess and expertise at an impressive first day at the University of Washington's Husky Classic. The Gauchos have solidified their stride and have set a promising tone for the remainder of the season. 

The Gauchos dominated in the 60m Hurdles Preliminaries, taking three of the eight qualifying spots for the Finals. Sophomore Maddie Conte led the team, placing third with a time of 8.73s. Jessica Swalve placed fifth with a time of 8.88s, while Alison Tjoe followed up in eighth place with a new personal record of 9.02s, having shaved off 0.26 seconds from her previous best. Chika Nwachuku placed ninth, also with a time of 9.02s, but a mere 0.009s slower than her teammate, Tjoe. 

In the 60m Hurdles Finals, Maddie Conte repeated her feat and won second place after shaving off 0.02 seconds from her qualifying time. Jessica Swalve and Alison Tjoe placed sixth and seventh, with times of 8.93s and 9.14s, respectively. Stina Johannsson placed sixth in her heat for the 3000m, with a time of 9:51.54 

The 200m was also productive for the Gauchos, as both Aoife Hernon and Sophia Pardo placed in the top ten with the sixth and eighth place spots. Isabella Vally and Amor Jones then arrived in the 13th and 14th spots. Vally procured a new 200m personal record of 25.55s as well as Katie Meade, who set a new best of 27.46m. 

Kennedy Johnson had yet another top three finish in the Triple Jump, placing on the podium for the third meet in a row. She won third place with her jump of 12.29m. Katie Meade placed sixth in the High Jump, achieving a height of 1.55m. Jessica Swalve also competed in the High Jump, placing seventh with a mark of 1.55m Amanda Spear placed sixth out of 23 in the weight throw, tossing a distance of 16.14m. 

The meet will continue Saturday, Feb. 10, starting at 9 a.m. with the Long Jump for the field and the 60m Preliminaries for the track event. .
